TAP and the civilian handoff

Transition Assistance Program is DoD’s classroom. Pair it with BDD, SkillBridge, and a VGLI calendar.

TAP is mandatory for most separating service members. The useful version is the one you treat as a checklist: BDD window, SkillBridge application, COEs, and who gets a copy of your medical record.

Active duty, Guard, and Reserve approaching separation or retirement.

  • Separation timeline
  • List of goals (school, job, claim)
Moves.
  1. Register for TAP through your installation transition office.
  2. Put BDD (180–90 days) and SkillBridge on the same calendar.
  3. Leave with copies of your medical record, not a promise that “VA has it.”

Timing hint: Start TAP early; seats fill.
