Most credit-score advice is technically correct and practically useless: "pay on time for years" is true, but it doesn’t help if you need a better score before a mortgage application in 60 days. The moves below are ranked by speed-to-impact — what can change your score in one statement cycle, what takes 30–90 days, and what’s a long-term play. Start at the top.
The 30/60/90-day map
| Timeframe | Moves that pay off in this window | Typical impact |
|---|---|---|
| 0–30 days | Utilization timing (#1), credit limit increase (#2), authorized user (#3) | 10–80+ points if utilization is the drag |
| 30–60 days | Error disputes (#4), rent/utility reporting (#7) | Varies — deletions can be large |
| 60–90 days | Pay-for-delete (#5), goodwill letters (#6) | 20–100 points if collections drop off |
| 90+ days | Payment streak, credit mix, account age (#8–11) | Slow, compounding |
1. Pay before the statement closes — not the due date (fastest)
The single most misunderstood mechanic in credit scoring: the balance reported to the bureaus is usually your statement balance, not what you owe after paying the bill. If your card closes its statement at $2,700 on a $3,000 limit, you’re scored at 90% utilization even if you pay in full every month. Pay the balance down before the statement closing date so a small number gets reported. Utilization has no memory — the score reacts to the most recent report, so this works in one cycle.

2. Ask for credit limit increases
Same math, opposite direction: raising the denominator drops utilization instantly. Most issuers let you request an increase online, and many do a soft pull (ask first). A $3,000 → $6,000 limit with the same balance halves your utilization without paying a dollar.
3. Become an authorized user on an old, clean card
If a family member has a long-standing card with low utilization and perfect payment history, being added as an authorized user imports that account’s history onto your report — often within one reporting cycle. You don’t need to use (or even possess) the card. What still works in 2026 (and what paid tradeline farms get wrong) is in authorized-user tradelines.
4. Dispute every error on all three reports
Roughly one in five reports has a verifiable error, and errors concentrate exactly where they hurt most: collections and charge-offs with wrong balances, wrong dates, or duplicate reporting. Deleting an erroneous derogatory routinely moves a score more than any utilization trick. Bureaus have 30 days to respond, so this is a 30–45 day play. The full process is in our step-by-step dispute guide — or 850ai can scan all three bureaus and generate the letters automatically.
5. Negotiate pay-for-delete on collections
Paying a collection usually doesn’t help your score under the older FICO models most lenders still use — removing it does. Before paying any collector, negotiate deletion in exchange for payment, in writing. Exact letter and script in our pay-for-delete template.
6. Send goodwill letters for isolated late payments
A single 30-day late on an otherwise clean account is a strong goodwill candidate: a short letter asking the creditor to remove the mark as a courtesy, citing your history and the circumstances. No legal force, costs nothing, works more often than people expect — especially with credit unions and smaller issuers. Template: goodwill letter. See also goodwill adjustment.
7. Report rent and utilities
Rent-reporting services and issuer programs (like Experian Boost) add on-time rent, phone, and utility payments to your file. Impact is modest and model-dependent, but it’s fast and helps thin files most.
8. Never close old cards (and 9–11: the slow compounders)
- Keep old accounts open — closing a card cuts your available credit (utilization up) and eventually your average account age.
- Automate minimum payments — one 30-day late can undo months of gains; payment history is 35% of a FICO score.
- Add a different credit type only when it makes sense (e.g. a small credit-builder loan if you have zero installment history).
- Rate-shop inside the window — multiple mortgage/auto inquiries within the scoring window count as one.
What NOT to do
- Don’t pay old collections without a deletion agreement or checking the statute of limitations first.
- Don’t close cards "to simplify" right before applying for a loan.
- Don’t fall for "tradeline rental" or file-segregation schemes — the first wastes money, the second is fraud.
- Don’t dispute accurate items as "not mine" — frivolous disputes get flagged and waste your credibility for real ones.
